World Tai Chi Day

One of the easiest ways to find out more about tai chi chuan is to participate in a World Tai Chi Day event. World Tai Chi Day is held all over the world each April. The 10th anniversary of World Tai Chi and Qigong Day will be on April 26, 2008.

If you're new to tai chi, you may never have noticed World Tai Chi Day before. But it's a big deal to people who practice tai chi. People in 60 nations celebrate World Tai Chi Day. Celebrations begin in New Zealand and end in Hawaii and Alaska.

The celebrations include:

· Tai chi chuan and qigong (chi kung) exhibitions · Free classes · Free information about tai chi chuan and qigong, including health benefits and where to take classes

In 1998, the Kansas City Tai Chi Club held a large tai chi exhibition and teach-in that got a lot of media attention. This got plenty of people interested in tai chi, so by the next year, many other tai chi fans around the globe decided to join in. And that made the first World Tai Chi and Qigong Day.

Now the event has an international organizing center in Overland, Kansas. Their job is to set goals for World Tai Chi and Qigong Day and help things run smoothly. Here are a few of their goals for World Tai Chi Day:

· To teach people about the health benefits of practicing tai chi chuan and qigong. · To teach people how tai chi chuan and qigong can help them in areas like business, education, drug rehabilitation, and criminal justice. · To help people all around the world to cooperate together to solve health problems and to appreciate each other's cultures and use each other's wisdom to solve problems.

Government officials from all around the world embrace World Tai Chi Day and make proclamations that they officially recognize the World Tai Chi and Qigong Day. Here are a few examples:

· The governors of at least 17 U.S. states. · The senates and legislatures of certain U.S. states. · The national senate of Puerto Rico. · Mayors of several cities worldwide, such as South Buenos Aires; El Paso, Texas; and St. Augustine, Florida

Of course, you don't have to attend a World Tai Chi Day event to practice tai chi. But it's nice to go to the events because you get to meet other people who practice tai chi and see how they do things, what they wear, etc. Plus it's a great way to meet new friends.

The best part about it, though, is probably that you get to see that tai chi really is for everyone. It's not just a Chinese thing. Everyone can do it, no matter where they're from, what they look like, how tall they are, how old they are, or whether they're a boy or a girl. No matter who you are, you can do tai chi.
